Government issues call for tenders for new electricity distribution centre at Mater Dei Hospital

Project will strengthen security of supply and provide additional capacity for planned future expansion

The Foundation for Medical Services and Enemalta plc are issuing a call for tenders for a new electricity distribution centre at Mater Dei Hospital, to strengthen security of supply and increase capacity for the continued expansion of services to its patients.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, Dr Ian Borg, and Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Dr Miriam Dalli, announced this investment on Saturday morning.

The dedicated distribution centre, which will be built within the Hospital grounds, will include 33/11kV and 11/0.4kV transformers, switchgear and other associated control and protection systems reinforcing the Hospital’s existing electricity infrastructure, which dates back to 2007. The project will also consolidate the Hospital’s connection to the national grid, with two additional 33kV feeders from Enemalta’s 132kV distribution centre in Kappara.

The project will also upgrade the Hospital’s standby power infrastructure, increase redundancy, and ensure continuity of service.

The additional capacity of the new distribution centre will support the hospital’s planned expansion in the coming years, including the ongoing construction of the new Medical Imaging Department building, the recently launched extension of the Emergency Department and new acute mental health wards, as well as other future projects.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg described the new distribution centre as an essential enabling investment for several crucial developments that the Ministry is implementing at Mater Dei Hospital.

“This project will energise our plans to future-proof our country’s principal tertiary care hospital and meet growing demand for its wide range of services. Together with technological upgrades, streamlined administrative and technical processes, and continued investment in our healthcare workforce, this infrastructural development will help us deliver higher quality and more efficient care for our patients,” Dr Borg said.

Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised that investing in a stronger electricity infrastructure is essential to ensuring that critical services, particularly healthcare, can continue operating reliably while meeting growing demand. “Reliable electricity is fundamental to the delivery of essential services. This investment is about strengthening the resilience of Mater Dei Hospital today, while ensuring that its infrastructure will continue supporting the healthcare services and facilities of tomorrow. We are ensuring that investment in healthcare goes hand in hand with investment in the energy infrastructure needed to sustain it. This project also forms part of our wider commitment to modernising Malta’s electricity network, increasing its capacity and resilience, and ensuring that our infrastructure keeps pace with the changing needs of our country,” Minister Dalli said.

The Foundation for Medical Services is coordinating the project’s implementation in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital and Enemalta plc. The call for tenders for the development of the new distribution centre was published this week. The deadline for submission of tenders is Tuesday, 1st December 2026.
